This item is an antique vintage right-handed 37 1/2" iron. Made by Tom Stewart of St Andrews Scotland. Made for the famous pro Alex Smith while he was at Wykagyl CC in New Rochelle, NY. Alex was one of the famous golfing Smith Brothers (MacDonald and Willie were two other brothers) who came over from Scotland and made quite the names for themselves as players, course designers and professionals. Alex won two US Open Championships, finished second three times, third 3 times and had two more top 10 finishes all from1898 to 1921. His first professional position was at Washington Park in Chicago. He then moved on the Nassau CC in Glen Cove, LI, NY where Bobby Jones' mentor Jimmy Maiden was his assistant. He was then off to the storied Wykagyl CC in New Rochelle, NY. After a short stay at Shennecossett in New London, CT, he became the pro at Westchester-Biltmore in Rye, NY. He also had winter positions at Coronado Beach, CA, Miami Biltmore, Coral Gables, FL and Belleair CC in Belleair, FL. The head is clean and not all rusted. It does have the expected minor play nicks and dings. Dots have been added to the originally smooth face. Please look at the many zoom pictures for a better idea of condition. The shaft is an old hickory. The shaft has a very minor bend, I see no cracks and it has some play at the hosel. All hickory shafted clubs should be re-set prior to play. The grip is an old long leather wrap that is in good vintage condition. 42* loft and a C 6 swingweight. If you are considering playing with this club all wooden shafted irons should be re-set prior to play. While I see no issues with the shaft (other than those mentioned above), I suggest that whipping be added just above the hosel to help prevent breakage. These wooden shafts often have hidden defects and are liable to break at any time. I do not guarantee wooden shafts against breakage when put into play. Never hit an old wooden shafted club off a driving range mat. Never hit an old wooden shafted wood with a hard range ball. Shipping in the US is calculated and based on a 3-pound box. This item shipped UPS Ground. For those of you that never ship but only receive items, the further you are from me in NC the more shipping will be. That is the way the carriers charge. On top of that, eBay and takes almost 15% of what I receive for shipping (out of $10 I receive $8.50) and I would like to break even. eBay collects sales tax for many states. They charge me 15% for that service and I never see that money. Powered by The free listing tool. List your items fast and easy and manage your active items.
