For a smaller size, turning the ends perpendicular to each other can bring it down to a 6 1/2 size to begin stretching.  This stretcher is made using heavy 3/8 x 16 metal threaded rods and turnbuckle (heavier than in most hat stretchers); heavy enough to take up to 175 lbs of torque pressure. The rods are anchored securely with threaded nuts counter sunk into the wooden ends to give extra strength and support when stretching.
